Nice, The Castle

The Castle doesn't actually exist anymore. It was razed to the ground in 1706, but the hill on which it once stood is still there at the far end of the Promenade des Anglais, close to the Old Town. You can walk up the steps to the top (we didn't, but on out way down, we did overhear a little boy on his way up, who had counted to over 100 steps…), alternatively take the lift up for a few cents.

The view as you step out of the lift is fantastic. Then you turn your back on the city and enjoy a stroll in the park, where the air is clear and fresh, under pine trees, amongst mosaics and the remains of ancient Greek ruins. There are a couple of cafes here, although most people seem to prefer to take picnic. There is also a running track and a children's playground. We were hoping to see the man made waterfall, but it was closed for renovation while we were there.
