Promenade des Anglais
This wide promenade runs along the beach and is one of the most famous parts of Nice. It was built in 1844 after the Reverend Lewis Way noticed that many English men and women loved to stroll up and down the area to see and be seen. It has been considerably widened since then but now fulfils the same role as it did nearly 200 years ago.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, many of the more well to do English enjoyed spending their winters in the less harsh climate of the French Riviera. The promenade provided a useful source of work, for the many beggars who were suffering from a particularly bad winter.
These days you are more likely to see joggers, pushchairs, roller bladers and cyclists than ladies in crinolines. But it remains a very popular place for people (and dogs) of all ages and levels of fitness. It does feel great to take time away from the bustle of the city, to walk along the palm tree fringed sea side with the beautiful Mediterranean water of the Cote D'Azur on one side and a spectacular parade of hotels, casinos, restaurants and shops on the other.
The promenade runs from the eastern end of Nice, along the old town all the way to the airport, nearly six miles away. The oldest and grandest hotels of Nice, which were built at the turn of the century line it, facing the sea. The most famous of these is the Hotel Negresco.
