I loved Nice Vieux, the old part of Nice. Its exceptionally narrow roads, ancient, tall buildings and higgledy-piggledy network of streets kept opening out onto unexpected squares, where suddenly I found a whole throng of people eating and drinking outside cafes and restaurants. The shops were fascinating too: not only the expected designer clothes shops and gift shops, but also beautiful, individual jewellery shops and extravagantly presented patisseries, which nestled cheek-by jowl with ancient churches and mundane garage doors. The only draw-back was that it was very easy to get lost in this maze of streets.
