We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to St Paul de Vence. We were lucky to go on a relatively quiet Easter day: it can get extremely crowded. In fact, over 2.5 million visitors go each year - considerably more than its number of residents (approximately 300).
This fortified village is protected as part of France's important national heritage. Medieval fortress walls surround the village. The entrance dates from the 1400s and has a canon from the 1554 Battle of Cerisoles.
Everywhere, your eyes are taken up to the walls (often decorated with artwork embedded) or over the walls to the snow-covered Alps or to the Mediterranean Sea.
