This memorial on the Promenade des Anglais is the Centenary Monument. It was built at the end of the 19th century to mark the first one hundred years of Nice joining France, which happened in 1860. Before that, Nice was Italian, although it changed hands many times, due to its importance as a port, therefore a centre both for trade and defence purposes.
This Centennial Monument faces the Mediterranean on the Promenade des Anglais, at the end of the Garden Albert 1st. It was constructed in 1893 and completed three years later.
The garden itself is also a historic site: it was named in 1914 after a Belgian king and was built to provide more places for people to stroll and relax, following from the great success of the Promenade des Anglais. Nowadays, this green space is a popular haven in a busy city.
